Chestnut Street Bridges

Smart design meets historic preservation in University City

  • Owner: PennDOT District 6-0
  • Location: Philadelphia County, PA

About this Project

This project rehabilitated a series of bridges along Chestnut Street in Philadelphia’s University City, including the Chestnut Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River and adjacent structures between 31st and 23rd Streets. Improvements included deck replacements, structural repairs, repainting, new traffic signals, wider sidewalks, resurfacing, retaining wall rehabilitation, and re-striping to add a protected bike lane. The project enhanced multimodal access across the river and improved safety for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.

AEG provided structural engineering and surveying services across multiple components. Plans were developed for temporary excavation support and protection systems for several bridges. A particularly complex challenge involved the historic arch bridge spanning active CSX rail lines. AEG designed a custom temporary arch support system that allowed deck replacement to proceed safely while maintaining the integrity of the arch and uninterrupted rail operations below. Additional services included structural calculations for sidewalk demolition and field surveys at various locations.
