I-95 Section CAP

Reconnecting Philly with a transformative urban park

  • Client: PennDOT District 6-0
  • Location: Philadelphia County, PA

About this Project

The I-95/Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) project is a landmark infrastructure initiative designed to reconnect Center City Philadelphia with the Delaware River waterfront. This $329 million partnership between PennDOT, the City of Philadelphia, and the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will replace and expand the existing covered area over I-95 between Chestnut and Walnut Streets, extending east over Christopher Columbus Boulevard. The centerpiece of the project is a 12-acre park, Knight Commons, featuring a green roof with natural woodlands, a playground, café space, amphitheater, and a relocated Blue Cross RiverRink. The project also includes a new signature “Tied-Arch” pedestrian bridge at South Street, extending over Columbus Boulevard to improve multi-modal access. Construction began in 2023 and is expected to be completed by 2029, with the park opening in 2030.

AEG is providing engineering support for this transformative project, including the design of multiple structural components. Our team is contributing technical expertise to ensure the integrity and performance of the infrastructure elements that will support both the park and the expanded pedestrian connections. AEG’s role is integral to the successful delivery of this complex urban cap, which will serve as a regional asset and catalyst for future waterfront development.
