Rebuilding I-78 for safety and sustainability

  • Owner: PennDOT District 5-0
  • Location: Berks and Lehigh Counties, PA

About this Project

This multi-phase initiative spans approximately eight miles of SR 78, a four-lane limited-access highway centered around the Krumsville interchange. Improvements include roadway widening, eastbound and westbound truck climbing lanes, retaining walls, sound barriers, and replacement of several mainline bridges and culverts. The project required analysis and design for rock cuts and steepened slopes to accommodate Right-of-Way constraints, and construction was staged to maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction throughout the project.

AEG performed soils and geologic reconnaissance, geotechnical investigations, and prepared all geotechnical reports. Services included boring contract preparation, oversight, and inspection; roadway and structure foundation analyses; pavement coring and CBR testing for subgrade evaluation; and infiltration testing to support post-construction stormwater management planning. AEG also conducted environmental investigations, identifying and delineating approximately 25 wetlands, performing Phase I and II biological surveys for bog turtles, and completing waste management and agricultural land use studies.

Supplemental surveys were conducted to support the design and permitting process. AEG’s work contributed to minimizing settlement impacts and reducing project costs, including evaluating wick drains as an alternative to over-excavation and eliminating the need for approximately 1,000 linear feet of retaining wall through slope stability analyses.
