A multi-phase reconstruction initiative to improve multiple sections of SR 78

  • Owner: PennDOT District 5-0
  • Location: Berks and Lehigh Counties, PA

About this Project

This rehabilitation and reconstruction endeavor is located along an eight-mile, four-lane limited access highway centered at the Krumsville interchange. The project is a multi-phase rehabilitation and reconstruction effort, starting with the interchange. Project improvements include roadway widening, eastbound and westbound truck climbing lanes, retaining walls, sound barriers, and replacing several mainline bridges and culverts. The project required analysis and design for rock cuts and steepened cut and fill slopes to accommodate Right-of-Way constraints.

AEG performed the soils and geologic reconnaissance, the geotechnical investigations, and the geotechnical report preparation for this project. AEG provided boring contract preparation, boring oversight and inspection, and preparation of roadway and structure foundation analyses. AEG was also responsible for the pavement coring and CBR testing to determine subgrade bearing capacity for pavement design. AEG also performed boring and test pit infiltration testing to investigate the proposed post-construction stormwater management plan.  AEG also conducted environmental investigations for this assignment, including identifying and delineating approximately 25 wetlands, a Phase I and Phase II biological survey for bog turtles, waste management, and agricultural land use studies and recommendations. AEG also performed supplemental surveys.
