Replacing a century-old bridge with a modern culvert
- Client: PennDOT District 5-0
- Location: Monroe County, PA
About this Project
This project replaced a two-span stone masonry arch bridge carrying SR 715 over McMichael’s Creek with a single-span concrete arch culvert. The original bridge, built over 100 years ago, had a 15-ton weight restriction. The new bridge reopened to traffic in 2024 with no weight limit restrictions.
AEG provided geotechnical engineering, survey, and Right-of-Way services during the final design phase, along with construction support. Supplemental surveys were performed to assist with the Final Right-of-Way Plan. AEG prepared and administered the boring contract, including specifications and a boring plan for the replacement structure. Laboratory testing was completed in AEG’s in-house AASHTO Verified and USACE Validated facility, and a Final Structure Foundation Report was prepared.
During construction, AEG reviewed shop drawings and geotechnical design parameters, ensuring the new structure met all performance and safety standards.
