Introducing a high-capacity vehicle processing hub
- Owner: PhilaPort
- Location: Philadelphia County, PA
About this Project
The PhilaPort Auto Storage Facility is part of a significant expansion effort at the Southport Auto Terminal, designed to accommodate the growing demand for vehicle imports and distribution across the U.S. East Coast. The facility spans 155 acres and includes a 108,000-square-foot Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) capable of handling over 1,000 cars daily and processing up to 350,000 vehicles annually. The site features 24,000 parking stalls, direct access to I-95 and I-76, and service by two Class I railroads – CSX and Norfolk Southern. The terminal layout is optimized for operational efficiency, minimizing the distance from the ship to the parking space and enabling rapid turnaround for vehicle delivery.
AEG was a member of multiple winning teams selected for three on-call engineering services contracts with PhilaPort. Under this task order, AEG helped convert 70.6 acres of neglected land into a functional auto port. Our team surveyed existing site features, prepared base plans, and conducted post-demolition surveys following the removal of several buildings. AEG also surveyed an existing pipe system using CCTV-marked locations and completed final as-built surface and storm drain surveys.
Geotechnical services included subsurface exploration and recommendations for pavement design, high-mast lighting foundations, and stormwater management. AEG performed infiltration testing and provided consultation to minimize environmental impacts, including assessments of wetland areas. Our team also supported construction activities by providing on-site inspection personnel to monitor the placement of fill and aggregate, compaction, and subbase preparation. Daily inspection reports, accompanied by detailed photograph logs, were submitted to document progress and ensure quality control. AEG also oversaw the installation of a new sanitary system for the facility.
