Poquessing Creek Watershed

AEG maps 60 miles of Philly watershed

  • Client: City of Philadelphia Water Department
  • Location: Philadelphia County, PA

About this Project

The Poquessing Creek Watershed spans approximately 20 square miles across Philadelphia, Bucks, and Montgomery counties, draining a densely urbanized landscape that includes neighborhoods, commercial districts, and open space lands. The watershed’s streams—many of which are impaired by stormwater runoff, channelization, and erosion—ultimately discharge into the Delaware River. Designated as a warm water fishery and nursery for migratory species, the watershed also serves as a source of drinking water for the City of Philadelphia. Restoration efforts aim to enhance stream habitat, safeguard aquatic resources, and reconnect communities with their waterways through improved access, green infrastructure, and responsible stewardship.

AEG served as the Prime Consultant for a comprehensive stream assessment of the Poquessing Creek Watershed. Our team conducted over 60 miles of stream walks to evaluate perennial stream conditions using the Unified Stream Assessment Methodology (USAM). Field data collection included geomorphic classification, riparian buffer evaluation, floodplain condition, and in-stream habitat analysis. Cross-section surveys, bankfull identification, and photographic documentation were performed at each reach. AEG also engaged with residents through interviews to understand historical changes in the watershed.

Hydrologic modeling and regression analysis were employed to calibrate bankfull flows, incorporating data from the Act 167 model and field observations. AEG developed GIS-based mapping of watershed features, including soils, geology, infrastructure, and stream networks. The resulting Poquessing Creek Watershed Stream Assessment Report provided a detailed geomorphic characterization, infrastructure survey, and prioritized recommendations for restoration. AEG’s work supports long-term watershed planning and protection efforts led by the Philadelphia Water Department and its partners.
