About this Project
The William H. Gray III 30th Street Station Redevelopment Project is a $550 million initiative to restore and modernize one of North America’s busiest intercity rail hubs. Scheduled for completion in 2027, the project spans nearly 500,000 square feet and represents the second phase of station renovation following Amtrak’s façade restoration. It also marks the first phase of the Philadelphia 30th Street Station District Plan, a long-term vision to transform the surrounding area into a vibrant, transit-oriented neighborhood.
Led by a public-private partnership between Amtrak, Plenary Infrastructure Philadelphia, Vantage, and Johnson Controls, with Gilbane and SOM as the design-build team, the redevelopment will enhance the station’s functionality for Amtrak, SEPTA, and NJ TRANSIT passengers. Key improvements include a reimagined Market Street Plaza, expanded retail and food offerings, upgraded pedestrian circulation, and the creation of a new Metropolitan Lounge. The upper floors will be converted into Amtrak’s engineering headquarters, supporting a modern hybrid work model. Historic architectural elements such as stone finishes, bronze doors, and Art Deco lighting will be carefully restored to preserve the station’s Beaux-Arts legacy.
AEG contributed specialized inspection and structural services to support the redevelopment. Our team performed rebar inspections, crane placement evaluations, and designed temporary shield protection to ensure safe construction practices. Structural assessments were conducted to assess existing conditions and support renovation planning. AEG also deployed advanced 3D survey scanning technology to capture precise spatial data, aiding in design coordination and documentation. These services helped facilitate the transformation of this historic landmark into a modern, multimodal transit hub.
