Chester County Bridge 134 Replacement

Engineering a resilient crossing over Brandywine Creek

  • Owner: Chester County
  • Location: Chester County, PA

About this Project

The Chester County Bridge No. 134 replacement project intends to provide a long-term fix for a structurally outdated crossing over the East Branch of Brandywine Creek in Upper Uwchlan and East Brandywine Townships. Built in 1939, the existing two-span steel multi-beam bridge rests on stone masonry substructures and spans approximately 82 feet, with a narrow curb-to-curb width of 19 feet and no sidewalks. The proposed new structure will be a single-span bridge designed to meet modern regulatory and design standards, while enhancing safety and accessibility.

AEG handles geotechnical engineering, environmental documentation and permitting, as well as hydrologic and hydraulic analysis. Our team conducted a Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Inventory (PNDI) search to verify the absence of federally and state-listed species and prepared a Wetland Identification and Delineation memorandum, which included field data and mapping. A functional assessment will be submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) as part of the permit application.

A detailed hydrologic and hydraulic analysis was performed to evaluate existing flood conditions and assess the proposed bridge’s hydraulic impacts in accordance with PADEP requirements. AEG also prepared a Boring Location Plan and is overseeing the subsurface investigation and testing program, including PennDOT-certified test boring field supervision and in-house laboratory testing. A foundation design report will be developed after completing the structure test borings.

AEG’s multidisciplinary approach guarantees that the replacement of Bridge 134 will be technically solid, environmentally responsible, and aligned with Chester County’s infrastructure goals.
