Department of Streets On Call – ADA

Reshaping accessibility for all in Philly

  • Client: Philadelphia Department of Streets
  • Location: Philadelphia County, PA

About this Project

Under this open-ended agreement with the Philadelphia Department of Streets, AEG is contributing to a citywide initiative to design and construct thousands of ADA-compliant curb ramps. These efforts are part of a broader commitment to accessibility, reinforced by a federal class action settlement requiring the City to install or repair at least 10,000 curb ramps over the next 15 years. The work is governed by the Philadelphia Streets Engineering Standards (PSES) and ADA curb ramp design guidelines, which outline strict criteria for slope, width, surface texture, and drainage.

AEG’s first assignment under this contract involved creating detailed work orders for 560 intersections using the Cityworks application. Each intersection, most of which have six to eight ramps, was carefully evaluated and planned to meet ADA Standards for Accessible Design. AEG’s designers and inspectors are trained to respond quickly to short-term deadlines, a critical capability for this fast-moving program.

Additional assignments include construction management and inspection of hundreds of ramps. AEG’s inspectors ensure compliance with ADA specifications, including longitudinal and cross slopes, landing dimensions, curb reveals, and transition zones. Their work helps prevent common issues such as ponding, tripping hazards, and noncompliant flare angles. By maintaining high construction standards and thorough documentation, AEG plays a pivotal role in making Philadelphia’s sidewalks safer and more accessible for all residents.
