Greening neighborhoods and protecting waterways
- Owner: Philadelphia Water Department
- Location: Philadelphia County, PA
About this Project
As part of the City of Philadelphia’s Green City, Clean Waters initiative, the Philadelphia Water Department is implementing Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) projects to reduce runoff, improve water quality, and enhance urban livability. These projects use decentralized tools, such as tree trenches, bump-outs, rain gardens, and subsurface storage systems, to mimic natural hydrology and reduce the burden on the city’s combined sewer system.
AEG serves as a retained subconsultant under multiple on-call contracts, providing construction inspection services at GSI project sites throughout the city. Our inspectors ensure that construction workflows comply with all relevant standards, regulations, and design specifications. Responsibilities include daily oversight of construction activities, documentation of progress, coordination with contractors and city agencies, and reporting on safety, weather, and materials testing. AEG’s inspectors are trained to respond quickly to short-term deadlines and manage multiple active sites simultaneously.
To date, AEG has supported dozens of GSI projects across Philadelphia neighborhoods, including:
- Lancaster Avenue 3 – Mantua/Belmont: storage trenches, tree trenches, bump-outs.
- Frankford Creek Greenway West – Juniata Park: storage trenches, tree trenches, bump-outs.
- Sprague / Vernon – East Mount Airy: water main replacement and GSI installation.
- Protestant Home and Devereaux – Lawndale/Oxford Circle: subsurface storage and tree trenches.
- Cedar Park 2 – Cedar Park: bump-outs, subsurface storage, tree trenches.
- Mount Airy Ave Green Streets – Cedarbrook: green infrastructure and water main upgrades.
- Forrest / Wadsworth – Cedarbrook: water main replacement and GSI installation.
- Lawndale Streets West – Lawncrest: subsurface infiltration and tree trenches.
- Logan Street Lot – East Germantown: rain garden installation.
- Hunting Park Cool Cover 1 – Hunting Park: tree trenches to increase summer shade.
- Conestoga Green Streets – Hestonville/Overbrook: tree trench implementation.
- Centrell/5th – Whitman/LoMo: water main and sewer replacement, GSI installation
AEG’s role in these projects supports the City’s long-term goals of stormwater management, climate resilience, and equitable infrastructure investment. Our inspectors play a crucial role in ensuring that each GSI element is built to last and functions as intended.
